Name: The Vision of Escaflowne. At one time, I called this anime "disturbing." I am older, wiser, and harder now, and the world has grown colder.... History: Dude, this is all Nicole's fault. If she hadn't shown me pictures of Van Fanel online, I would never have gotten in anime, and now I'd have about a thousand more bucks in my account. YOU OWE ME A THOUSAND DOLLARS, NICOLE! Art: This is the best anime I know for art. The quality is consistent, the designs are original (some cheese-slicin' noses you're gonna have to get used to if you wanna watch it), and the mechs are distinctive (why put a cape on a giant robot?). Characters: Everybody's likable-- and that's almost a problem. This is a kid's show, inspite of the sexuality and the blood and the death and the war and all that good stuff. The writers took care to keep the villains from becoming too crazy; even Dilandau, insane firebug that he is, becomes sympathetic later on in the show. The message is a warm and fuzzy, "There is good in everyone" that makes a cynical bitch like me snort her coffee out through her nose. Unfortunately, Hitomi is an acquired taste that I just never... uh, acquired. She really damages my enjoyment of this anime with her indecisiveness and her sheer (at times) stupidity. Plus, I mean, how many times can a girl look up at the sky and say a boy's name in a thoughtful tone of voice? Plot: Big war. Unresolved sexual tension. The discovery of the good in everyone. There's only one absolute filler show, though! Whooot! (By Absolute Filler, I mean: take it out of the series and you miss nothing except for Hitomi getting drunk. I just skip over it nowadays). Music: Oh, uber cheese. Allen Schezar's theme is always good for a belly laugh when I'm in a pissy mood. Sorry, Kanno, but I'm not digging it this time. "Eeeesssscaaaflooooowwwwneeee!" will haunt your dreams after a good 'thon of this, I swear. Dub or Sub?: Hitomi's voice? Intolerable in English. Go for the sub.
Escaflowne: A Girl In Gaea History: See Esca. Want to see Hitomi and Van kiss. Go buy movie. Walk away pissed. Art: The art of this movie is really interesting. The character designs were tweaked so that everyone looks older and sexier. The cheese-slicin' noses (which I actually quite like) are blunted, and the feel is kind of Serial Experiments Lain in nature. That seems to be the default art style of OVAs these days, and I wish it weren't. Plot: Flimsy. Save the world from Folken and his evil plot. In the meantime, a suicidal Hitomi gets whisked to Gaea to do absolutely nothing, inspite of being "The Goddess of Wings," a distinction that is never explained. Reactions: Blah, they still don't kiss. I don't see what's wrong with two kids kissing when there's obviously nothing wrong with chopping them into bits or driving them hopelessly insane. |
