.about me.

Name: Neon Genesis Evangelion.
The "Clockwork Orange" of Anime.

History: The boyfriend showed me the first few episodes in the same animethon that had introduced me to Macross Plus. I was hooked-- blissfully unaware that the series would go to hell in a handbasket after episode 14...

Art: The Evangelions rock! Watching these biomechs run, fight, and (often) get their asses kicked is a joy. The character designs are serviceable but not Earth-shattering... typical Gainaxian fanservice on the part of the women. Although it is never stated baldly, white hair+ red eyes= Angel stock, apparently.

Characters: "Hi. Meet some nice, flawed, likeable people. Now watch them all go completely batshit insane!" <--- That's pretty much all you need to know about the characters.

Plot: The Internet debate about what the hell it is this show is actually about rages to this day, and I don't feel the need to put my two cents in on one side or the other. The plot (the one they present to you) is young kids piloting huge biomechs to save the world from an invading, alien force called "Angels." There's heavy (and garbled) symbolism that leads other viewers to give the series as a whole a "deeper" interpretation. I am not one of them. Basically, this is a coming-of-age story, an apocalyptic story, a FUN story. I think people who take it too seriously are the ones who will be the most scarred by the series of events. And re: Yaoi-- hell yes, Shinji's gay!Come ON, people, that was one thing the writers handed to you on a platter.

Music: Evangelion features moody, floating-techno-style music. It's unnerving most of the time, and cheesy the rest of the time. I came to like it, but I wouldn't run out and buy the CD.

Dub or Sub?: Shinji's whipped-ass voice is intolerable in English. Plus, the techno-babble and the subtext between characters suffers greatly in the English translation. Go for the sub.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: OVAs
"Death and Rebirth" is Death and Rerun. Don't bother. I'm concerned with "The End of Evangelion" here.

History: I am one of the few people who did not hate the end of the original series. I thought it was a fittingly introspective (if a little bit easy) end. However, Gainax felt the need to "wrap" everything up, producing a movie that just confused the hell out of me and didn't fit anywhere in the logical sequence of events.

Art: Fantasic, as always for an OVA. And, uhhh... graphic.

Plot: Basically, everybody dies and the world ends. Although, as usual, there are those that beg to differ. Differ away; this movie hurt my poor abused brainpan.

Music: Okay, "Tumbling Down" is the soundtrack to the end of the world? I don't think so.

Reactions: Da hell? I understood this movie well enough, but I can't say I understood the point. And the end? Da hell?! No, seriously: I liked this movie, I like this show, and I don't find anything all that confusing or objectionable about it. Sure, there's homosexuality, sexual abuse, incest, apocalypse, emotional abuse, nudity, pain, angst, trauma, forcible cloning, Angelic DNA abuse, religious overtones, and homicide... so what's not to like?
